Dr. Ashley Feinsinger is bioethics faculty in the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Her research pursues questions at the intersection of ethics, philosophy of language, and neuroscience, with a focus on invasive basic brain research in ... humans. She received her PhD in Philosophy from UCLA, completed the Medical Education Fellowship from DGSOM at UCLA, and Advanced Training in Health Care Ethics Certification from the University of Washington. She has published on a range of topics, including medicalization and the ethics of non-therapeutic research with implanted devices. Funded by the NIH BRAIN Initiative, she leads a neuroethics lab focused on understanding patient-participant motivations for enrolling in invasive brain research. Through comparing patient values with those of researchers and the public, she aims to incorporate the patient perspective in research design. Her approach to neuroethics is interdisciplinary, collaborating with neurosurgeons, behavioral psychologists, and patient-participants to address conceptual questions about exploitation and trust, as well as practical questions about patient engagement and consent.

Dr. Paul J. Mathews received his bachelors degree from the University of Oregon where he studied invertebrate behavioral plasticity in the lab of Dr. Nathan Tublitz. He received his Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Texas at Austin under the mentorship of Dr. Nace ... Golding. Dr. Mathews work focused on understanding how the biophysical properties of specific voltage-gated ion channels in an auditory brainstem nuclei contribute to their capacity to make sub-millisecond computations necessary for low frequency sound localization. For the past several years Dr. Mathews has been working at UCLA under the mentorship of Dr. Tom Otis where he is currently working to uncover the cerebellar circuit mechanisms that underlie motor learning and memory. To do this Dr. Mathews is utilizing a multifaceted approach that includes both in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology, optogenetics, advanced optics, histology, and behavioral manipulations to make links between cerebellar circuit activity and motor output in rodent models. He is currently on the job market looking for a tenured track assistant professor position.

I am an affective and systems neuroscientist leading the Translational Neuromodulation Lab in the Department of Neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine. My lab seeks to leverage targeted neural stimulation, electrophysiology, neuroimaging, and cognitive neuroscience tasks to ... understand the neural bases of affective and social cognitive dysfunction. This program of research has led to the identification of a novel stimulation-based strategy for evoking positive affect and anxiolysis, for which our team has a United States Patent awarded. I was honored when this project was selected as the featured cover article at the Journal of Clinical Investigation, with coverage by the NIH Director's Blog4. This nascent program of research has garnered academic and public media attention, and I am fortunate to serve as PI on a variety of NIH-funded projects in the intracranial research domain (KL2TR000455, K01MH116364, R21NS104953, R01MH127006).
