Assortment of High Fiber FoodsWe all know that obesity is a growing problem in this country. Now, with the release of a new list of the obesity rates by state, it is evident that not only is the problem on the rise, but there are changes taking place. According to the science article that was published on Live Science News and which was based on the most recent Gallup-Healthways poll, Colorado no longer has the position of being the least obese of the states. Montana has now claimed that title. At the higher end of the spectrum, Mississippi was ranked as being the most obese state, a position formerly held by West Virginia. Mississippi scored a 35.4% obesity rate for the year of 2013, staying in the range that has made it one of the top 10 obese states since 2008 while Montana fell well below at 19.6%. That rate gave Montana the only score below 20% of all 50 states. During the three-year period of 2010 through 2012, West Virginia held the title of “Most Obese State” while Colorado was ranked as the least obese state. While some states seem to be making improvements, the national obesity rate rose almost a full percentage from 26.2 the previous year to 27.1. The most disturbing facts based on the poll numbers is the high incidence of chronic disease in those states with the highest obesity rates. There are also parallels between low obesity rates and a higher incidence of healthy eating and exercising.
